Here I fill some balloons with acetylene gas and then blast them with a laser!! I also mix up a terrifying oxy-acetylene balloon which ended up being LOUD.
In the video, I make some acetylene balloons using the classic calcium carbide + water method of generating acetylene. In order to ignite the balloons and not just pop them, I put some homemade nitrocellulose on the outside to provide an ignition source. Then I generated some pure oxygen gas with a hydrogen peroxide decomposition reaction (that went a little more...energetic than expected :p) and then filled it with acetylene and detonated it with a laser. The end scene was a hot ferrocerium rod smacked with a machete.
